The resort is aptly named Akumal, or “land of the turtle” in Mayan, because of the turtles that consistently return to the beach to nest.
And get this!
They’ve been doing this since ancient times and continue to do so year after year.
Secrets Akumal has been open since 2015 and is an adults-only all-inclusive resort.

4. Gay Weddings at Secrets Akumal
Same-sex weddings are legal in certain states in Mexico.
Almost all wedding resorts in the Riviera Maya welcome gay weddings.
You can’t go wrong with having your wedding at Secrets Akumal.
But it’s important to know there are 2 types of ceremonies: symbolic & legal.
The most common option is to have a symbolic ceremony in Mexico.
All the legal paperwork can be done in your home state.
It’s often easier that way because it’s less foreign paperwork for you.
If you do want a legal wedding in Mexico, it’s possible with a little extra help.

5. Room Types
Wondering about the accommodation options at Secrets Akumal?
Prices start at $286 per person, per night and increase depending on your room.
Suite options include:
- Junior Suite
- Preferred Club Junior Suite
- Romance Master Suite
- Presidential Suite
Each suite has a furnished balcony or terrace.
And they offer small dog-friendly accommodations so you don’t have to leave your 4-legged friend behind!
Swim-up suites are another cool option that are as delightful as they sound.
They are stunning, and you simply swim up to your room!
These include a king bed or 2 double beds.
If you want to splurge, go with the double jacuzzi option.
Imagine soaking in the jacuzzi with your honey after a long day at the beach…
Rooms have a daily stocked minibar and a coffee machine.
There is also an in room iPad where you can order room service from.
The best part?
Aside from not having to talk to anyone, the food gets delivered to your room via a secret hatch.

6. Beach
You can’t plan a Mexico destination wedding without knowing more about the beach.
After all, that’s 1 of the things people look forward to the most!
The beach at Secrets Akumal is breathtakingly gorgeous, with white sand and crystal clear waters.
If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a glimpse of the local turtles.
The resort has snorkel equipment you can rent, or you can buy your own locally for pretty cheap.
If you want to just chill & catch some rays, the beach is the perfect spot.
7. Food & Drink
This resort is a foodie’s dream.
They have 9 different restaurants and 6 bars & lounges to choose from.
Talk about options!
Another perk of the unlimited luxury concept is that you don’t have to worry about making reservations.
You can just show up and enjoy the food…
But be sure to double check if the restaurant has a dress code!
Restaurant options include:
- Market Cafe – Buffet
- Seaside Grill – By the pool
- Barefoot Grill – Light lunch specialities

If you choose the pool or beach areas, there is water service available to you.
This way you don’t have to worry about leaving your spot to go up to the bar for another drink.
An extra perk of staying here is that you can eat or have drinks at other local resorts.
This includes any Dreams, Secrets, and Now resorts.
You do have to make a reservation with the chosen resort’s concierge if you decide to take advantage of this perk.
The times you can book are from 6 pm until 1 am.

There is no lack of activities & entertainment at Secrets Akumal.
They have 3 pools, each dedicated to a different activity.
For example, 1 has activities & games whereas the other is laid back for those looking to relax.
They offer pool equipment like sun loungers with headrests so you can enjoy the sun.
If lounging in the pool isn’t your thing, there’s something for you too!

Secrets Akumal is a gorgeous resort that offers variety in its wedding services.
Not to mention all the activities to choose from for you & your guests!
It doesn’t hurt that they now have accommodations for small doggos either.
The only con for this resort is if you’re planning on having children at your wedding.
Since this is an adults-only resort it’s not a good option for family events.
