Wedding Planning FAQs
-
How much does a destination wedding cost?
Most couples spend between $5,000 and $20,000 on the wedding itself, depending on their guest count and the details they choose. That covers the ceremony, dining, décor, and reception at an all-inclusive resort. (Based on 2,000+ of our recent weddings.)
It’s usually far less than a traditional wedding back home, which averages about $34,200 in the U.S. Tell us your guest count and budget, and we’ll help you explore resorts and packages that fit. Contact us! -
What's in a wedding package?
Typically, a wedding package includes ceremony setup, flowers, officiant, cake, cocktail hours, and even a sparkling toast. Some packages even include a private dinner or a spa day.
-
Should we visit the destination first?
If you can, absolutely! Think of it as a sneak peek at your paradise. But if you can't, don't stress. 87% of couples we work with don't do site visits. That's what experienced wedding specialists (like ours!) are here for. We know the ins, outs, and secret gems.
-
How do we pick the right destination and resort?
It's a little bit about your style, a little bit about your guest list, and a lot about the vibe you want. Beachy and barefoot? Glamorous and luxe? We'll help you match your dream to the perfect backdrop.
-
How do we manage guest travel and stays?
Don't worry, we've got you. From booking rooms to arranging airport shuttles, we help make sure your guests glide in smoothly. No chaos, no confusion... just celebration.
-
Are destination weddings legally binding?
They sure can be! Every country has its own rules, and we'll walk you through the paperwork step-by-step. Or, if you prefer, you can do the legal stuff at home and keep the ceremony all about love and fun.
-
How many guests usually attend?
Destination weddings are like the VIP version of weddings. It's your true inner circle. Most groups range from 20 to 80 guests, but we've seen everything from cozy elopements to full-on family fiestas.
-
When's the best time for a destination wedding?
It depends where you're headed! Some months bring better weather (and better deals). We'll help you pick the sweet spot so you're sipping margaritas, not dodging hurricanes.
-
What if the weather doesn't cooperate?
Mother Nature does her thing. But the good news? Resorts always have backup plans that are just as gorgeous. A little rain can't stop a great party... it might even add some extra magic.
-
How early should we start planning?
The earlier the better, especially if you want the best resorts and prime dates. Ideally, start dreaming and scheming 12 to 18 months out. But if you're last-minute magic makers, don't panic, we can still pull off something amazing. 🙌
-
How much do guests pay for a destination wedding?
Guests typically pay about $990 each for their stay. That's roughly 4 nights at an all-inclusive resort, with their room, meals, and drinks included. (Based on 37,000+ guest bookings we’ve handled.)
-
Is a destination wedding cheaper than getting married at home?
Usually, yes. The average U.S. wedding costs about $34,200, while most destination weddings cost between $5,000 and $20,000 all-in, which already includes the venue, dining, and décor. (Based on 2,000+ of our recent weddings.)
-
Who pays for a destination wedding, the couple or the guests?
You pay for the wedding itself, the ceremony, the reception, and anything you choose to host. Your guests pay for their own flights and resort stay, the same as they would for any trip. Some couples cover a welcome dinner or a group activity, but that’s optional. Making this clear early, ideally in your save-the-dates, keeps everyone comfortable.
-
How many guests usually come to a destination wedding?
About 39 on average, smaller than a wedding back home, which most couples see as a plus.
Here’s the typical spread:
Under 30 guests: 30%
30 to 50: 29%
50 to 100: 37%
100 or more: 4%
Most land between 30 and 100. We’ve planned everything from elopements for 2 to family celebrations of 850+. (Based on 2,000+ weddings we’ve booked.)
-
How far in advance should I book a destination wedding?
About a 1 ahead is the sweet spot, when the best resorts and dates are still open.
Here’s how our couples usually time it:
Under 6 months: 4%
6 to 12 months: 48%
12 to 18 months: 40%
18 months or more: 8%
Nearly half book within a year, so there's no need to panic if you're closer in. The earlier you start, the more choice you'll have. (Based on the timing of 2,000+ of our weddings.)
-
Is Mexico or the Caribbean better for a destination wedding?
Both are beautiful, but 93% of our couples choose Mexico: Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cabo, and Puerto Vallarta. It tends to win on direct flights, resort variety, and value.
The Caribbean, mainly the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, is a great fit if you’re after a particular island feel. We’ll help you weigh them against your vibe, guest list, and budget.
-
Are destination weddings rude or unfair to guests?
It's a fair thing to wonder, but the feedback we get is that most see it as a getaway.
Here's what helps.:
Giving plenty of notice. (most of our couples book about a year out)
Being clear about costs up front.
Pick a resort with options at different price points.
Some might not make the trip, but the guests who do come often call it the best wedding they’ve been to.
-
Is a destination wedding worth it?
For most couples, yes. You usually spend less than a wedding at home, the celebration stretches across several days instead of a few hours, and your closest people share a vacation with you. The trade-off is that guests have to travel, some won’t be able to, and you’re planning from a distance. That last part is the piece we handle for you.
-
Do I need a wedding planner for a destination wedding?
You're not required to, but it's hard to do well without one. You're coordinating a resort, a room block, guest travel, and local vendors from another country, often in another language. A planner manages all of it, and because the resorts pay us, our help is free to you.
